Q: What originally brought you to Butler Community College?
A: I came to Butler to pursue my dream of playing college football. I went to a small high school and had only played one season at my position, so I was still very much a late bloomer. Butler gave me the opportunity to bet on myself and see where football could take me, and I'm incredibly grateful for that.
Q: Is there a faculty member, mentor, class, or experience at Butler that had a lasting impact on you?
A: Countless people poured into me during my time at Butler. I'm very thankful for my coaches, who pushed me, challenged me, and taught me how to work hard. I was also blessed with wonderful teachers. Andrea Scharenberg was an excellent accounting teacher who taught me basic principles I still use daily. Lisa Schmidt taught me the basics of computers and was one of the kindest people I met at Butler, always investing in her students. And finally, Coach Steve Braet - rest in peace. He was a tough coach, but he always wanted the best for his players, and I miss him very much.
Q: What are you doing today, and how did your time at Butler help shape your path?
A: Today, I am the fourth generation in my family's business, Cozine Memorial Group, which serves families through funeral services in the Wichita area. I am the funeral director, as well as the director of operations, which means wearing a lot of different hats in a small business. Last month, I graduated with my master's degree in management from Harvard University. I credit Butler with helping me get started on the business track, while also teaching me the work ethic and discipline that have shaped my path ever since.
Q: What does being a Butler alum mean to you?
A: While I have since gone on to pursue other degrees, I look back very fondly on my time at Butler and with gratitude for where it all began. I'm proud to live in Wichita, to serve this community, and to be a Butler alumnus.
